CRIME AND PUBLIC SAFETY

Public safety plays a large role in defining a community’s quality of life. Over the last three years, the City of Chattanooga has seen record reductions in crime and achieved the lowest murder rate in more than thirty years. Still, more than 10,000 people are arrested every year in Chattanooga and throughout Hamilton County. At any given time, more than 1200 individuals are in County jail facilities and, in 2003, 3.5% of all inmates sent to State Prison came from Hamilton County. CRC will examine trends in policing, prosecution and corrections and assess efforts to reduce crime in the Chattanooga region.

CRC and Public Safety

CRC has provided data analysis support to Community Impact of Chattanooga in analysis of crime trends in Community Impact neighborhoods.

Projects in Development

CRC is in the process of developing proposals to examine the processing of misdemeanor cases in Hamilton County and racial disparities in the criminal justice system
